What do gymnasts do in a Dynamics Gymnastics – Cambridge session?

Dynamics Gymnastics – Cambridge classes give gymnasts the opportunity to experience General Gymnastics.  General Gymnastics is a British Gymnastics discipline that encourages gymnasts to learn a variety of low level skills from other British Gymnastics disciplines such as Artistic Gymnastics, Acrobatic Gymnastics, Trampoline Gymnastics and Rhythmic Gymnastics.  At Cambridge we have access to a 12m x 8m floor area, a horse, a trampette, a bar, benches, 2 trampolines, a full size floor beam and fixed wall bar apparatus with beam, ladder and bar attachments.  During the classes, gymnasts progress towards achieving badges 8 – 1 of the British Gymnastics Proficiency Award Scheme followed by the Dynamics Gymnastics Award Scheme.  Gymnasts demonstrating particular potential in these classes will be offered the opportunity to join the Friday 5 - 7pm class as a transition to potentially joining a local competition club.

When are the classes?

Classes run on a Thursday as follows:

5 – 6pm: Beginner boys and girls aged 5 - 8

6 - 7pm:  Beginner boys and girls aged 9+ and experienced gymnasts

Where are the classes?

The classes are at the Parkside Community College gymnasium in the centre of Cambridge.  Parkside Community College can be found on Parkside which runs alongside Parker’s Piece. It is approximately 150m beyond the police station on the right had side. Two large blue gates mark the entrance.  During class times, parking is usually available in the front playground and the gym is the building to the right as you enter the playground.  Please note, however, that the barrier to the front car park is typically not lowered by school staff until 5pm on weekdays.  Before this time, access to the back car park is via Prospect Row and parking here is available just while you drop gymnasts off at the class.  In addition to this, the car parks can get very busy particularly when there is a school event at the same time as our classes.  Although we try to warn parents of such events, we are unable to guarantee advising you in advance and recommend that you always allow plenty of time should you opt to try and park at the school.

N.B. Building work is due to start in the back playground in March 2010 and is expected to take approx a year to complete.  During this time, parking in the back playground will be unavailable and the barrier to the front playground is unlikely to be lowered before 5pm on weekdays.  Parents of gymnasts in the Thursday 5pm class may therefore wish to consider alternative methods of dropping the gymnasts at their class during the building work.

How much does it cost?

The cost is currently £45 a term for 10 sessions (£40 for the slightly shorter 9.10am Saturday class and £90 for the 2 hour Friday class).  An additional annual fee of £15.00 is collected every July to cover Dynamics Gymnastics affiliation fees which are used to cover insurance requirements.  Fees are due at the beginning of each new term either in the form of a lump sum or two cheques, one post dated for half term.

What do gymnasts wear?

We simply ask that gymnasts wear sports clothing that allows for freedom of movement.  To minimise potential hazards, however, we do request that gymnasts' clothing is buckle, clasp and zip free and not so loose that it could catch on apparatus or a coach.  Leotards are obviously suitable as are well fitted t-shirts, shorts, leggings etc.  Gymnasts are asked to participate in bare feet or gymnastics slippers, remove any jewellery and tie long hair back.  We do offer a range of club clothing, including a leotard, t-shirt and girl's shorts but these are not compulsory.

How do I register?

At the current time all Dynamics Gymnastics – Cambridge classes are full and have waiting lists in place.  To register your child on the waiting list, please contact us by using the details on the Contact Us page.  We will need to know the potential gymnast’s name, date of birth, prior experience and will need as many contact details as possible.  Please provide an e-mail if at all possible as this is the quickest and cheapest way to communicate.  Please note, although we don't start gymnasts until they are 4 its is advisable to add future gymnasts to the waiting list by their 3rd birthday.
